Support for Rural Communities

Education happens within the context of a larger community. Our approach extends beyond the school to help ensure students have the necessary support to do their best learning. We will be expanding the Barbara Sitton Memorial Scholarship to all of the high school seniors in Wheeler, Gilliam and Sherman counties begining in 2023.

Supporting education and innovation.

This charitable endeavor was started to memorialize Barbara Sitton whom we lost to complications of a stroke in May of 2020. Barb was a women of strong faith and very beloved and active in the community of Fossil, Oregon. She was involved in youth sports, fair, rodeo, rodeo royalty, youth exchange programs, and always had an open-door, often providing safe shelter for women and youth in need. She is greatly missed and we are honored to have the opportunity to help others in her name.

We are actively developing our mission statement but the overall vision for the Barbara Sitton Memorial Charity, Inc. is to inspire, promote and enhance the educational experience of rural youth. We will work towards accomplishing this by donating to educational and other rural community organizations that help promote and develop community-sustainable practices and also by providing financial assistance to individuals for post-secondary education. We also plan to raising awareness around early stroke recognition and interventions through various community projects and annual stroke awareness walk.

We held our 2nd Annual Barbara Sitton Memorial Walk in Fossil, Oregon, this year. The walk will always be held on the second weekend in May to help raise funds for the charity. Do Date we have been able to provide a $1000 scholarship to a 2022 graduating Senior from Wheeler High School (Barb’s alma mater) and contributed a $300 donation to the Wheeler County Gun Club 4H Group. We will be presenting a buckle to the high point cowgirl or cowboy at the play night and cash bonuses to two outstanding 4H participants.

John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Barb loved the Lord, her community and all of the people in it, she always met you with her contagious smile and her laugh and hug always made you feel like everything was going to be okay. She was always the first to provide a safe place for lost youth and troubled women to call home.
